The company

Luxury Yacht Crew, a member of the Luxury Yacht Group, is a world leader in providing professional crew for luxury yachts.

The role

When a yacht owner hires a Captain, he/she essentially hands them the keys to manage a multi-million dollar vessel. This must be done responsibly and safely at all times.

Yacht Captains hold responsibilities in various directions. They are responsible for adhering to budgets. They manage the money and accounting on board. They make decisions with regard to crew. They oversee the upkeep of the vessel. They take control of repairs and yard visits and must answer to the owner with regard to all decisions made on the vessel. They assume the role of “host” and entertain when necessary for charter clients, guests and yacht visits. They manage refit projects and ultimately must commit themselves to projects wholeheartedly.

Requirements:

• Proof of Captain’s License (this should be appropriate to size and flag of vessel).
• Outstanding references and complete background paperwork.
• Experience in a variety of cruising areas (Outstanding geographical knowledge).
• Ability to manage repairs, refits & general yard work.
• Knowledge of all positions on board – (the Captain must have a keen insight to all responsibilities of crew – from Engineering to Junior Stewardess).
• Advanced Computer & Business skills (specifically on yachts with heavy accounting duties).
• Personnel management skills & ability to be diplomatic with crew under his/her management.
• Excellent work history with previous owners, crew and industry associates.

The person

Depending upon the size of the vessel, a Captain may also assume a dual role of Captain / Engineer. In these cases, a Captain must possess vast knowledge of the inner workings of his vessel. He must be able to trouble shoot, fix and maintain his equipment. The smaller the vessel, the more hands-on the Captain must be. The larger the vessel, the more administrative duties the Captain will hold.

Regardless of the size of vessel, the Captain must be familiar with overall safety codes (ISM for large vessels) and the safety training of crew. Captains should be familiar with issuing standing orders and budget management at all levels. The Captain’s job is all-encompassing. The responsibilities are tremendous, but the reward is often worth it.
