The company
Luxury Yacht Crew, a member of the Luxury Yacht Group, is a world leader in providing professional crew for luxury yachts.
The role
An Engineer must be a very technically minded individual who can wear many hats during the course of the day. He must be able to transition well between engine room work and interacting with guests.
The Engineer will ultimately be responsible for keeping the mechanical side of the yacht running without a hitch. Most yacht Engineers have a formal license. Those who do not are quickly gathering the necessary paperwork and taking the necessary courses to become licensed.
In the last year, maritime authorities are beginning to tighten the belt on licenses and regulations. On some private vessels, engineers are working unlicensed, but most are very experienced in the industry. On charter yachts, where the vessel can be a liability, engineers must hold a license in accordance with the vessels’ horsepower, gross tonnage and kilowatt power. Vast knowledge in air conditioning and water makers will almost always be a “must”.
An Engineer will be responsible for just about everything on the vessel that could break and need to be fixed. This includes everything from the main engines to smaller pieces of equipment like jet-ski’s, televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.
The person
This individual must be able to trouble shoot and repair virtually everything in the confines of the yacht. Additionally, a good engineer will have a good knowledge base of finding and purchasing parts for the vessel. As most yachts travel around the world, it is important to maintain and inventory all parts and be prepared for breakages, replacements, etc.
An engineer must be suitably qualified and licensed to work on the vessel in question. A highly licensed Engineer, (ie. Class 1 Commercial / Merchant / Y2, MCA) will command a high salary in most cases. Engineers with good experience and MCA valid licenses will find employment opportunities relatively easy to come by.
Requirements:
• Proof of Engineering License & applicable training certificates (this should be appropriate to the GRT, KW power, HP requirements of the vessel)
• Outstanding references and complete background paperwork
• Excellent record of safety – one who prioritizes safe operations in the engine room & throughout the vessel.
• High level of experience working with and maintaining yacht engines, generators, air conditioning systems, electrical systems and water makers.
• Expert in preventative maintenance & troubleshooting
• Ability to manage and supervise engine repairs, rehauls and general upkeep in the Engine Room
• Ability to manage and train subordinate staff in the engine room (large yachts only).
• Some computer skills and ability to log engine issues, repairs, etc.
• Good knowledge of outsourcing contractors and shore based repairs when necessary.
The reward
Excellent career opportunities
