The latest survey form the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) has revealed that the average total package for leadership roles such as managing directors and chief executives has hit six figures for the first time at £101,989 – an increase of 5.9 per cent on 2006.

Also on the up are graduate salaries, with the average ‘fresh graduate’ scooping up £26,833.

Faststream’s Civil & Structural Engineering Manager, James Room commented: “These figures represent a natural market response to the lack of skilled talent within the civil engineering sector.” Alix Bainger-Davis who recruits graduates for Faststream’s clients added “graduate in this market will earn roughly £3,500 more than the average salary across a broad spectrum of industries, which is significant and highly attractive to people making decisions about which career route to take.  It is vital for our industry that we encourage more students to consider a civil engineering degree as a route to a good career.”

The average salary for men is £51,400, compared to £38,000 for women; the differential is a result of fewer females occupying senior posts.
